What is a multiple in math?

The multiple of a number is the product of this number by any other number (0, 1, 2, 3, ...).

Our calculator works on the set of natural numbers, but there are multiples in the set of numbers, integers, real, etc. Therefore, a multiple can also be negative.

For example, the number 147 can be divided by 3 without a reminder. Like this, 147 is a multiple of 49, because, 3 times 49 equals 147. In other words, we can say that 147 is a multiple of 3 because there is a natural - 3 - which multiplied by 49 equals 147. The statement '147 is a multiple of 3' is equivalent '147 is divisible by 3', or that 3 is a divider of 147.

So to find the multiples of 49, simply multiply this number by a number of the set of natural numbers as many times as we want. See below how to do it for the number 49:

  • 49 x 0 = 0 so, 0 is a multiple of 49.
  • 49 x 1 = 49 so, 49 is a multiple of 49.
  • 49 x 2 = 98 so, 98 is a multiple of 49.
  • 49 x 3 = 147 so, 147 is a multiple of 49.
  • 49 x 4 = 196 so, 196 is a multiple of 49.
  • 49 x 5 = 245 so, 245 is a multiple of 49.
  • 49 x 6 = 294 so, 294 is a multiple of 49.
  • 49 x 7 = 343 so, 343 is a multiple of 49.
  • 49 x 8 = 392 so, 392 is a multiple of 49.
  • 49 x 9 = 441 so, 441 is a multiple of 49.

The first 10 multiples of 49 are: 0, 49, 98, 147, 196, 245, 294, 343, 392, 441.

Facts About Multiples

  • Any number is a multiple of itself (n x 1 = n).
  • Any number is a multiple of 1 (1 x n = n).
  • Zero is a multiple of any number (0 x n = 0).
  • The set of multiples of a number is an infinite set, since we can get this by multiplying the number given by all natural numbers.
  • The set of multiples of n can be represented by M n = {0 x n, 1 x n, 2 x n, 3 x n, 4 x n, ...} (where n is any natural). For example, the set of multiples of 49 is represented as M 49 = {0, 49,98,147,196, ...}.

Common Multiples

If two numbers are multiplied, then the product is a common multiple of these two numbers.

Example: if two numbers 49 and 3 are multiplied, then the result 147 is a common multiple of 49 and 3.

Note: The product of these two numbers is not necessarily the least common multiple-LCM of these numbers.
