What is a multiple in math?

The multiple of a number is the product of this number by any other number (0, 1, 2, 3, ...).

Our calculator works on the set of natural numbers, but there are multiples in the set of numbers, integers, real, etc. Therefore, a multiple can also be negative.

For example, the number 261 can be divided by 3 without a reminder. Like this, 261 is a multiple of 87, because, 3 times 87 equals 261. In other words, we can say that 261 is a multiple of 3 because there is a natural - 3 - which multiplied by 87 equals 261. The statement '261 is a multiple of 3' is equivalent '261 is divisible by 3', or that 3 is a divider of 261.

So to find the multiples of 87, simply multiply this number by a number of the set of natural numbers as many times as we want. See below how to do it for the number 87:

  • 87 x 0 = 0 so, 0 is a multiple of 87.
  • 87 x 1 = 87 so, 87 is a multiple of 87.
  • 87 x 2 = 174 so, 174 is a multiple of 87.
  • 87 x 3 = 261 so, 261 is a multiple of 87.
  • 87 x 4 = 348 so, 348 is a multiple of 87.
  • 87 x 5 = 435 so, 435 is a multiple of 87.
  • 87 x 6 = 522 so, 522 is a multiple of 87.
  • 87 x 7 = 609 so, 609 is a multiple of 87.
  • 87 x 8 = 696 so, 696 is a multiple of 87.
  • 87 x 9 = 783 so, 783 is a multiple of 87.

The first 10 multiples of 87 are: 0, 87, 174, 261, 348, 435, 522, 609, 696, 783.

Facts About Multiples

  • Any number is a multiple of itself (n x 1 = n).
  • Any number is a multiple of 1 (1 x n = n).
  • Zero is a multiple of any number (0 x n = 0).
  • The set of multiples of a number is an infinite set, since we can get this by multiplying the number given by all natural numbers.
  • The set of multiples of n can be represented by M n = {0 x n, 1 x n, 2 x n, 3 x n, 4 x n, ...} (where n is any natural). For example, the set of multiples of 87 is represented as M 87 = {0, 87,174,261,348, ...}.

Common Multiples

If two numbers are multiplied, then the product is a common multiple of these two numbers.

Example: if two numbers 87 and 3 are multiplied, then the result 261 is a common multiple of 87 and 3.

Note: The product of these two numbers is not necessarily the least common multiple-LCM of these numbers.
