What is a multiple in math?

The multiple of a number is the product of this number by any other number (0, 1, 2, 3, ...).

Our calculator works on the set of natural numbers, but there are multiples in the set of numbers, integers, real, etc. Therefore, a multiple can also be negative.

For example, the number 27 can be divided by 3 without a reminder. Like this, 27 is a multiple of 9, because, 3 times 9 equals 27. In other words, we can say that 27 is a multiple of 3 because there is a natural - 3 - which multiplied by 9 equals 27. The statement '27 is a multiple of 3' is equivalent '27 is divisible by 3', or that 3 is a divider of 27.

So to find the multiples of 9, simply multiply this number by a number of the set of natural numbers as many times as we want. See below how to do it for the number 9:

  • 9 x 0 = 0 so, 0 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 1 = 9 so, 9 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 2 = 18 so, 18 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 3 = 27 so, 27 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 4 = 36 so, 36 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 5 = 45 so, 45 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 6 = 54 so, 54 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 7 = 63 so, 63 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 8 = 72 so, 72 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 9 = 81 so, 81 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 10 = 90 so, 90 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 11 = 99 so, 99 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 12 = 108 so, 108 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 13 = 117 so, 117 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 14 = 126 so, 126 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 15 = 135 so, 135 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 16 = 144 so, 144 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 17 = 153 so, 153 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 18 = 162 so, 162 is a multiple of 9.
  • 9 x 19 = 171 so, 171 is a multiple of 9.

The first 20 multiples of 9 are: 0, 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90, 99, 108, 117, 126, 135, 144, 153, 162, 171.

Facts About Multiples

  • Any number is a multiple of itself (n x 1 = n).
  • Any number is a multiple of 1 (1 x n = n).
  • Zero is a multiple of any number (0 x n = 0).
  • The set of multiples of a number is an infinite set, since we can get this by multiplying the number given by all natural numbers.
  • The set of multiples of n can be represented by M n = {0 x n, 1 x n, 2 x n, 3 x n, 4 x n, ...} (where n is any natural). For example, the set of multiples of 9 is represented as M 9 = {0, 9,18,27,36, ...}.

Common Multiples

If two numbers are multiplied, then the product is a common multiple of these two numbers.

Example: if two numbers 9 and 3 are multiplied, then the result 27 is a common multiple of 9 and 3.

Note: The product of these two numbers is not necessarily the least common multiple-LCM of these numbers.
