How the Calculation Works
When a stock drops, the percentage gain needed to return to the original price is always greater than the percentage of the loss. This happens because the percentages are calculated on different bases:
- The loss is calculated on the original (higher) price
- The recovery is calculated on the current (lower) price
For example, if a stock drops from $100 to $60:
- Loss: (100 − 60) ÷ 100 × 100 = 40%
- Recovery needed: (100 − 60) ÷ 60 × 100 = 66.7%

As you can see, the bigger the loss, the exponentially larger the recovery must be. A 50% loss requires the price to double (+100%), while an 80% loss requires it to quintuple (+400%).
