Why Do WiFi and Microwave Ovens Share 2.4 GHz?

Both use the 2.4 GHz ISM (Industrial, Scientific, and Medical) band, allocated by the ITU for unlicensed use. Microwave ovens were already using 2.45 GHz for heating food (water molecules absorb this frequency efficiently). When WiFi was developed, the 2.4 GHz ISM band was chosen because it required no license, despite the interference from ovens. The 5 GHz band was later opened to provide a less congested alternative.
