How to read inches on a ruler
A standard inch ruler divides each inch into equal fractions. The longest lines mark each whole inch; the next-longest is the 1/2 mark (halfway); then come the 1/4 marks, the 1/8 marks, and the shortest lines, the 1/16 marks. Counting the small lines from the last whole inch tells you the fraction.
- 1/2 inch — the single tall line in the middle of each inch.
- 1/4 & 3/4 inch — halfway between the inch line and the 1/2 mark.
- 1/8 marks — 1/8, 3/8, 5/8, 7/8 sit between the 1/4-size lines.
- 1/16 marks — the shortest lines; most rulers stop here.
For a decimal like 3.8″, find the whole inch (3) then round the rest to the nearest 1/16 — 0.8″ ≈ 13/16, so 3.8″ is at the 3 13/16 mark.
