How Working Days Are Calculated

Working days (also called business days) are the weekdays — Monday through Friday — that are not public holidays. To calculate working days in a year:

  1. Start with total calendar days (365 or 366 in a leap year)
  2. Subtract weekend days (all Saturdays and Sundays)
  3. Subtract federal holidays that fall on weekdays

The US federal government recognizes 11 holidays per year. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, it is typically observed on the preceding Friday; when it falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday. This calculator counts the actual calendar dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many working days are in 2026?

2026 has 251 working days. This is calculated by taking the 365 calendar days, subtracting 104 weekend days (Saturdays and Sundays), and then subtracting 10 US federal holidays that fall on weekdays.

How many business days are in each month?

Each month typically has 20 to 23 business days, depending on the number of weekdays and whether any federal holidays fall within the month. February usually has the fewest (around 19-20), while months like March and August often have the most (up to 23).

What is the difference between working days and business days?

There is no difference. Working days and business days are the same thing: Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays. Both terms refer to the days when most businesses and government offices operate.

Do all companies follow the same holiday schedule?

No. The 11 US federal holidays are observed by government agencies and many private companies, but private employers are not legally required to give any holidays off. Some companies offer additional holidays (like the day after Thanksgiving), while others may not observe all federal holidays.
