Road base6–8 in15–20 cm

How to Calculate Asphalt Tonnage

  1. Measure length and width of the area in feet.
  2. Determine thickness in inches: 2–3″ for residential driveways, 3–4″ for commercial.
  3. Calculate volume: L × W × (thickness ÷ 12) = cubic feet.
  4. Calculate weight: Multiply cubic feet by 145 lb/cu ft, then divide by 2,000 for tons.

Imperial example: A 20 × 40 ft driveway, 3 inches thick: 20 × 40 × (3/12) = 200 cu ft × 145 = 29,000 lbs = 14.5 tons7.41 cubic yards.

Metric formula: Tonnes = L (m) × W (m) × D (cm) × 2,323 kg/m³ ÷ 100,000

Metric example: A 6 m × 12 m driveway, 8 cm thick: 6 × 12 × 0.08 = 5.76 m³ × 2,323 kg/m³ = 13,380 kg = 13.38 tonnes.

Asphalt Cost Breakdown

  • Material only: $100–$200 per ton ($110–$220 per tonne) of hot mix asphalt.
  • Installed: $3–$6 per sq ft ($32–$65 per m²) for a residential driveway.
  • Typical 2-car driveway (20 × 24 ft / 6 × 7.3 m, 3″ / 8 cm): ~5 tons (~4.5 tonnes) material + labor = $2,500–$5,000 total.

Hot Mix vs Cold Patch

Hot Mix Asphalt

Professional application using a paving machine. Best durability and smoothest finish. Requires minimum quantities (usually 1+ ton). Applied at 275–325°F — not a DIY material.

Cold Patch

DIY-friendly for potholes and small repairs. $15–$25 per 50 lb bag. No minimum order, no special equipment. Apply, compact, and drive on immediately. Temporary — may need reapplication.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate asphalt tonnage?

Area (sq ft) × thickness (in) ÷ 12 × 145 (lb/cu ft) ÷ 2,000 = tons. Example: 20 × 40 ft at 3″: 200 cu ft × 145 = 29,000 lbs = 14.5 tons.

How much does an asphalt driveway cost?

$3–$6 per square foot installed, or $2,500–$5,000 for a standard 2-car driveway (20 × 24 ft, 3″ thick). Material alone: $100–$200 per ton.

How long does an asphalt driveway last?

15–20 years with proper maintenance. Seal-coat every 3–5 years, fill cracks promptly, and avoid heavy vehicles during extreme heat when asphalt softens.

Asphalt vs concrete driveway — which is better?

Asphalt: cheaper ($3–$6/sq ft vs $6–$12), faster install, easier repair, but shorter lifespan (15–20 yrs vs 30+). Concrete: more durable, more design options, higher upfront cost.
