Material Weight Reference
Approximate weight per cubic yard for common construction materials (ASTM-sourced densities):
| Material | lb/cu yd | Tons/cu yd |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete (mixed) | 4,050 | 2.03 |
| Gravel (loose) | 2,700 | 1.35 |
| Crushed stone | 2,700 | 1.35 |
| Sand (dry) | 2,700 | 1.35 |
| Asphalt (hot mix) | 3,915 | 1.96 |
| Topsoil (loose) | 2,025 | 1.01 |
| Mulch (wood chips) | 540 | 0.27 |
Values are approximate and vary with moisture content, compaction, and material grade. Source: ASTM C29 (aggregates), ACI 211.1 (concrete).

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate how much material I need?
Measure length × width × depth (all in feet), then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. For weight, multiply cubic yards by the material density. Our calculators handle all conversions and unit mixing automatically.
What's the difference between cubic yards and tons?
Cubic yards measure volume; tons measure weight. The conversion depends on material density. For example, 1 cubic yard of gravel weighs about 1.35 tons (2,700 lbs), while 1 cubic yard of mulch weighs only about 0.27 tons (540 lbs).
Should I order extra material?
Yes, always add 5–10% for waste, spillage, and uneven terrain. For concrete, add 10% because it’s much better to have extra than to run short during a pour.
How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?
Exactly 27 cubic feet (3 × 3 × 3). To convert cubic feet to cubic yards, divide by 27. To convert cubic yards to cubic meters, multiply by 0.7646.
Material densities sourced from ASTM C29 (Standard Test Method for Bulk Density of Aggregates) and ACI 211.1 (Standard Practice for Selecting Proportions for Normal Concrete). Actual weights vary with moisture content, compaction, and material grade.
