How to Calculate Rafter Length

  1. Measure the building span — the full width from the outside of one wall to the outside of the opposite wall, in feet or meters.
  2. Determine the run: divide the span by 2. For a 30 ft (9.14 m) building, the run is 15 ft (4.57 m).
  3. Find the rise: multiply the run by the pitch ratio. For a 6/12 pitch: 15 × (6/12) = 7.5 ft (2.29 m).
  4. Calculate the rafter length: use the Pythagorean theorem: √(run² + rise²). For our example: √(225 + 56.25) = √281.25 = 16.77 ft (5.11 m).
  5. Add overhang: for a 12″ (30 cm) overhang, add 1 ft (0.30 m): 16.77 + 1 = 17.77 ft (5.42 m). Round up to the next standard lumber length.
