How to Estimate Shingles for a Roof
- Measure the roof footprint — the ground-level length and width in feet. For complex roofs, break the area into rectangles and triangles, then add them together.
- Determine the roof pitch — the rise in inches per 12 inches of horizontal run. You can measure this with a level and tape measure from the attic, or use a pitch finder tool.
- Apply the pitch multiplier — multiply the footprint area by the multiplier from the table above to get the actual roof surface area.
- Add waste factor — multiply by 1.10 to 1.20 depending on roof complexity (10–20% extra).
- Calculate roofing squares — divide total area by 100. One roofing square = 100 sq ft.
- Calculate bundles — multiply squares by 3 for standard shingles (3 bundles per square at 33.3 sq ft per bundle).
Imperial example: A 40 × 30 ft roof with a 6/12 pitch: 1,200 sq ft × 1.118 = 1,341.6 sq ft. With 10% waste: 1,475.8 sq ft = 14.76 squares = 45 bundles.
Metric example: A 12 m × 9 m roof with a 6/12 pitch: 108 m² × 1.118 = 120.7 m². With 10% waste: 132.8 m² ≈ 14.3 squares (1 square ≈ 9.29 m²) = 43 bundles.
Understanding Roofing Squares
A roofing square is the standard unit of measurement in the roofing industry. One square equals 100 square feet of roof surface area. Roofing contractors price materials and labor by the square, making it easy to compare quotes.

What waste factor should I use for shingles?
Use 10–15% waste for simple gable roofs with few obstructions. Use 15–20% waste for complex roofs with multiple valleys, hips, dormers, skylights, or chimneys. First-time DIY installers should add an extra 5% to account for learning-curve mistakes and cutting waste.
What is the minimum roof pitch for asphalt shingles?
The minimum recommended pitch for standard asphalt shingles is 4/12 (4 inches of rise per 12 inches of run). For roofs between 2/12 and 4/12, special low-slope application methods with additional underlayment (ice & water shield over the entire deck) are required per most building codes.
