Types of Mulch

Wood Chips / Bark

Most common mulch type. Decomposes in 1–2 years, adding nutrients to soil. $30–$50/cu yd bulk. Best for flower beds, trees, and general landscaping.

Rubber Mulch

Lasts 10+ years, doesn’t attract insects or decompose. $80–$150/cu yd. Best for playgrounds and high-traffic areas where longevity matters.

Straw

Cheap and temporary. $5–$10/bale. Best for new grass seed protection, vegetable gardens, and erosion control. Replace every few months.

Compost Mulch

Double duty — mulch + soil amendment. Apply 1–2 inches per season. Improves soil structure and provides slow-release nutrients to plants.

How to Calculate Mulch for Your Garden

  1. Measure the area in feet: length and width. For irregular beds, break into rectangles and add the results.
  2. Choose your depth: 2–3 inches for flower beds, 3–4 inches for pathways and around trees.
  3. Calculate volume: L × W × (depth ÷ 12) = cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards.
  4. Convert to bags: Divide total cubic feet by 2 (standard bag size) and round up.

Imperial example: A 10 × 20 ft bed, 3 inches deep: 10 × 20 × (3/12) = 50 cu ft ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards = 25 US bags (2 cu ft each).

Metric example: A 3 m × 6 m bed, 8 cm deep: 3 × 6 × 0.08 = 1.44 m³ (1,440 liters) = 26 bags (56 L each).

How Much Does Mulch Cost?

  • Bulk (by cu yd / m³): $30–$60/cu yd ($40–$80/m³) for wood mulch, $80–$150/cu yd ($105–$196/m³) for rubber. Delivery: $50–$100.
  • Bagged US (2 cu ft / 57 L): $4–$8 per bag. 13.5 bags per cu yd.
  • Bagged EU/AU (50–56 L): ~18 bags per m³. Easier to handle; more expensive per volume.
  • Break-even: bulk delivery is cheaper for projects over ~3 cubic yards (~2.3 m³).

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bags of mulch do I need?

Calculate cubic yards (L × W × D ÷ 27), then multiply by 13.5 for 2-cu-ft bags. Example: a 10 × 20 ft bed, 3″ deep = 1.85 cu yd = 25 bags.

How often should mulch be replaced?

Organic mulch (wood chips, bark): refresh annually, typically in spring. Add 1–2 inches each year. Rubber mulch: lasts 10+ years without replacement.

Should I remove old mulch before adding new?

No, unless it is more than 4 inches deep or matted/compacted. Simply add fresh mulch on top to reach the desired 2–4 inch depth.

How many cubic yards of mulch fit in a dump truck?

A standard pickup truck bed holds about 2 cu yd. A single-axle dump truck: 5–8 cu yd. A tandem-axle dump truck: 10–14 cu yd.
