Internet Speed to Download Speed
ISPs advertise in Mbps (megabits). Your downloads show in MB/s (megabytes). Divide by 8 to convert.
| ISP Speed | Download Speed | 1 GB Download |
|---|---|---|
| 10 Mbps | 1.25 MB/s | 13 min 20 sec |
| 25 Mbps | 3.13 MB/s | 5 min 20 sec |
| 50 Mbps | 6.25 MB/s | 2 min 40 sec |
| 100 Mbps | 12.5 MB/s | 1 min 20 sec |
| 200 Mbps | 25 MB/s | 40 sec |
| 300 Mbps | 37.5 MB/s | 27 sec |
| 500 Mbps | 62.5 MB/s | 16 sec |
| 1 Gbps | 125 MB/s | 8 sec |
Bits vs Bytes — The #1 Internet Speed Confusion
Mbps (Megabits)
ISPs, speed tests, and routers use megabits per second. When your ISP says “100 Mbps,” they mean 100 million bits per second. Lower-case “b” = bits.
MB/s (Megabytes)
Browsers, download managers, and file transfers show megabytes per second. Your “12.5 MB/s” download speed IS the full 100 Mbps — just divided by 8. Upper-case “B” = bytes.
The Formula
1 byte = 8 bits. To convert Mbps to MB/s: divide by 8. To convert MB/s to Mbps: multiply by 8. Example: 300 Mbps ÷ 8 = 37.5 MB/s.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?
Mbps (megabits per second) is how ISPs measure internet speed. MB/s (megabytes per second) is how your computer shows download speed. Since 1 byte = 8 bits, divide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s. Example: 100 Mbps = 12.5 MB/s.
Why is my download speed slower than my internet plan?
ISPs advertise in Mbps (bits), but downloads show in MB/s (bytes). Divide your plan speed by 8: a 100 Mbps plan downloads at about 12.5 MB/s. Network overhead reduces this further to about 11–12 MB/s in practice.
How fast is gigabit internet?
1 Gbps = 1,000 Mbps = 125 MB/s. You can download a 1 GB file in about 8 seconds, a 4K movie (20 GB) in about 2.5 minutes, or a full AAA game (80 GB) in about 11 minutes.
What internet speed do I need?
25 Mbps for basic use (1-2 people). 50-100 Mbps for HD streaming + gaming. 200-300 Mbps for 4K streaming + multiple users. 500+ Mbps for large households with heavy usage.
All data rate conversions use SI base 10 (1 Kbps = 1,000 bps, 1 Mbps = 1,000 Kbps) as used by ISPs, speed tests, and the IEEE 802 standards. 1 byte = 8 bits.
