Mbps vs MB/s — What’s the Difference?

Mbps (megabits per second) is how ISPs and speed tests measure internet connection speed. MB/s (megabytes per second) is how your browser and operating system show download speed. Since 1 byte = 8 bits, your download speed in MB/s is always 1/8 of your ISP speed in Mbps.

This is the #1 source of confusion about internet speed: “I pay for 100 Mbps but only download at 12 MB/s!” — that’s actually correct. 100 ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s.

Mbps to MB/s Formula

MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8

Worked Example

Convert 300 Mbps to MB/s: 300 ÷ 8 = 37.5 MB/s.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my download speed lower than my internet speed?

ISPs use Mbps (bits), downloads show MB/s (bytes). Divide your ISP speed by 8 to get the expected download speed. Network overhead reduces it slightly further.

Is 100 Mbps fast?

Yes. 100 Mbps = 12.5 MB/s. It’s enough for 4K streaming, gaming, and multiple devices simultaneously. It downloads a 1 GB file in about 80 seconds.

How do I convert Mbps to MB/s?

Divide by 8. Example: 300 Mbps ÷ 8 = 37.5 MB/s. This works because 1 byte = 8 bits.

What is the difference between Mb and MB?

Mb (lowercase b) = megabit. MB (uppercase B) = megabyte. 1 MB = 8 Mb. The case of the “b” matters! ISPs use bits (Mbps), files use bytes (MB).
