How do I know if a year is a leap year?

A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4 and not divisible by 100, OR if it is divisible by 400. For example, 2024 is a leap year (divisible by 4, not by 100), and 2000 was a leap year (divisible by 400).

When is the next leap year?

After 2024, the next leap years will be 2028, 2032, 2036, and 2040. Leap years occur every 4 years with rare exceptions.

What is a Leap Year?

A leap year is a calendar year with 366 days instead of the usual 365. The extra day (February 29) is added to keep the calendar synchronized with Earth's orbit around the Sun, which takes approximately 365.25 days.

The Leap Year Rules

The three conditions for a year to be a leap year are:

It must be divisible by 4 without remainder and not divisible by 100 (years ending in two zeros);
OR it must be divisible by 400 (in that case it will be a leap year).

Examples:

Was 2000 a leap year?

2000 is divisible by 4 (= 500), so it could be a leap year;
2000 is divisible by 100 (= 20), so it might not have been a leap year, but;
2000 is divisible by 400 (= 5), so we conclude that 2000 was a leap year.

Was 2020 a leap year?

It is divisible by 4 (= 505), so it could be a leap year
2020 is not divisible by 100 (= 20.2), therefore, it was a leap year.

Was 2018 a leap year?

2018 is not divisible by 4 (= 504.5), therefore, it was not a leap year.

Will 2100 be a leap year?

2100 is divisible by 4 (= 525), so it could be a leap year;
2100 is divisible by 100 (= 21), so it might not be a leap year;
2100 is NOT divisible by 400 (= 5.25), therefore 2100 will NOT be a leap year.
