Military Time Converter & Chart
Quick fact: Military time (the 24-hour clock) runs from 0000 (midnight) to 2359 (11:59 PM). For hours after noon, subtract 12 to get the AM/PM equivalent — so 1700 = 5:00 PM.

How to Read Military Time
Military time uses a 4-digit format where the first two digits represent the hour (00–23) and the last two digits represent the minutes (00–59). There is no colon and no AM/PM suffix. The rules are simple:
- Hours 0000–1259 — read just like AM standard time (with 00 = 12 AM and 12 = 12 PM).
- Hours 1300–2359 — subtract 12 from the hour to get the PM equivalent. Example: 1700 → 17 − 12 = 5 → 5:00 PM.
- Minutes never change when converting between 24-hour and 12-hour formats.
- Midnight is
0000(start of day) or sometimes2400(end of day). Noon is1200.
How to Convert Military Time to AM/PM
Follow these three steps to convert any military time to standard 12-hour time:
- Look at the hour (first two digits). If it is less than 12, it's a morning hour (AM). If it is 12 or greater, it's an afternoon/evening hour (PM).
- If the hour is 13 or greater, subtract 12. For example, 1800 − 1200 = 600 → 6 o'clock. Leave the minutes unchanged.
- Add AM or PM. Use AM for hours 0000–1159 and PM for hours 1200–2359.
Standard hour = Military hour if Military hour ≤ 12 (with 00 = 12 AM, 12 = 12 PM)
Worked examples:
- 0730 → Hour 7 is before noon, keep as is → 7:30 AM
- 1200 → Noon, written as 12:00 PM
- 1530 → 15 − 12 = 3, after noon → 3:30 PM
- 2045 → 20 − 12 = 8, after noon → 8:45 PM
- 0000 → Midnight → 12:00 AM
How to Say Military Time
Military time is spoken differently than regular time. Instead of saying "seventeen hundred hours" or "five PM", the standard spoken forms follow a few simple rules:
- On-the-hour times are pronounced as the number plus the word "hundred". 1700 = "seventeen hundred". 0800 = "zero eight hundred".
- Hours before 1000 are prefixed with "zero" for each leading zero digit. 0600 = "zero six hundred", not "six hundred".
- Times with minutes use the full four-digit number. 1730 = "seventeen thirty". 0945 = "zero nine forty-five".
- Midnight (0000) is often called "zero hundred" or simply "midnight". Some branches use "twenty-four hundred" for end-of-day.
- The suffix "hours" (as in "1700 hours") is common in US military usage but is not part of the NATO or international standard.
Why Use Military Time?
The 24-hour clock is used wherever precision matters and AM/PM ambiguity could cause serious problems:
- Military operations — coordinating forces across time zones without miscommunication
- Aviation — flight plans, ATC communications, and airline schedules worldwide
- Healthcare — hospital charts, medication timing, and shift handoffs (a wrong AM/PM could be fatal)
- Emergency services — police, fire, and EMS dispatching
- Computing and IT — log files, timestamps, and scheduled jobs
- Public transit — train and bus schedules in most countries
- Scientific research — experiment logs and astronomical observations
Most countries outside North America use the 24-hour clock as their default for schedules, timetables, and digital displays, even if they informally say "five o'clock" instead of "seventeen hundred" in conversation.
