Kilometers per Liter Calculator (km/L)
Calculate your vehicle’s fuel efficiency in km/L from distance driven and fuel used. Also see L/100km, MPG (US), and MPG (UK) equivalents.
km/L Reference Table
| km/L | L/100km | MPG (US) | MPG (UK) | Efficiency Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 12.5 | 18.8 | 22.6 | Below average |
| 10 | 10.0 | 23.5 | 28.2 | Average |
| 12 | 8.3 | 28.2 | 33.9 | Average |
| 14 | 7.1 | 32.9 | 39.5 | Good |
| 16 | 6.3 | 37.6 | 45.2 | Good |
| 18 | 5.6 | 42.3 | 50.8 | Good |
| 20 | 5.0 | 47.0 | 56.5 | Excellent |
| 25 | 4.0 | 58.8 | 70.6 | Excellent |
| 30 | 3.3 | 70.6 | 84.7 | Excellent |
km/L = 100 ÷ L/100km. MPG (US) = km/L × 2.352. Higher km/L means better fuel efficiency.
How to Calculate km/L
To measure your car’s real fuel efficiency:
- Fill up the tank completely and note the odometer reading (or reset the trip meter)
- Drive normally until the tank is low
- Fill up again and note how many liters were pumped
- Divide kilometers driven by liters used
Example: You drove 500 km and used 35 liters. km/L = 500 ÷ 35 = 14.29 km/L.
km/L vs L/100km
km/L (kilometers per liter) tells you how far you can drive on one liter of fuel — higher is better. It is used in Japan, India, and parts of Southeast Asia.
L/100km (liters per 100 kilometers) tells you how much fuel you need for 100 km — lower is better. It is used in Europe, Australia, and Canada.
They are simple inverses: L/100km = 100 ÷ km/L and km/L = 100 ÷ L/100km.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good km/L?
For a passenger car, 14-20 km/L (7-5 L/100km) is good, and over 20 km/L is excellent (typically hybrids). SUVs average 10-12 km/L. Pickup trucks often get 7-9 km/L. The higher the km/L, the more fuel-efficient the vehicle.
How to convert km/L to MPG?
MPG (US) = km/L x 2.352. For example, 15 km/L = 15 x 2.352 = 35.3 MPG (US). Alternatively, convert to L/100km first (100 / km/L), then MPG = 235.215 / L/100km.
km/L vs L/100km — what is the difference?
km/L tells you how far you go on one liter (higher is better). L/100km tells you how much fuel you use per 100 km (lower is better). They are inverses: L/100km = 100 / km/L. Most of Europe uses L/100km, while some Asian countries prefer km/L.

Fuel efficiency calculated using km/L = kilometers ÷ liters. Conversion: L/100km = 100 ÷ km/L. MPG (US) = 235.215 ÷ L/100km. MPG (UK) = 282.481 ÷ L/100km.
