How to Calculate L/100km

L/100km = (Liters used ÷ Kilometers driven) × 100

To measure your car’s real fuel consumption:

  1. Fill up the tank completely and note the odometer reading (or reset the trip meter)
  2. Drive normally until the tank is low
  3. Fill up again and note how many liters were pumped
  4. Divide liters by kilometers driven, then multiply by 100

Example: You drove 500 km and used 35 liters. L/100km = (35 ÷ 500) × 100 = 7.0 L/100km.

L/100km vs MPG — Which Is Better?

L/100km measures how much fuel you use (lower is better). MPG measures how far you go on a gallon (higher is better). L/100km is considered more intuitive for comparing costs because it scales linearly — going from 10 to 8 L/100km saves the same amount of fuel as going from 6 to 4.8 L/100km.

With MPG, the relationship is not linear: improving from 15 to 20 MPG saves much more fuel than improving from 35 to 40 MPG, even though both are a 5 MPG improvement.

L/100km (liters per 100 kilometers) is a metric fuel consumption measure used in most countries outside the US. It tells you how many liters of fuel your vehicle needs to travel 100 km. Lower is better — a car using 6 L/100km is more efficient than one using 10 L/100km.

What is a good L/100km?

For a passenger car, 5-7 L/100km is good, under 5 is excellent (typically hybrids). SUVs average 8-10 L/100km. Pickup trucks and large SUVs often use 12-15 L/100km. Typical new cars in Europe range from 4-7 L/100km depending on size and powertrain: compact cars often achieve 4-5 L/100km, while SUVs may use 7-9 L/100km.

How to convert L/100km to MPG?

MPG (US) = 235.215 / L/100km. For example, 8 L/100km = 235.215 / 8 = 29.4 MPG. For MPG (UK), use 282.481 / L/100km. The difference is because a US gallon (3.785 L) is smaller than an Imperial gallon (4.546 L).
