Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my running pace?

Divide your total time by distance. Example: 30 minutes for a 5K (3.1 miles) = 9:41 per mile or 6:00 per km. Use the calculator above to get exact pace, speed, and splits.

What is a good running pace?

It depends on your experience level:

  • Beginner: 10–12 min/mile (6:13–7:27 /km)
  • Intermediate: 8–10 min/mile (4:58–6:13 /km)
  • Advanced: 6:30–8:00 min/mile (4:02–4:58 /km)
  • Elite: under 5:00 min/mile (under 3:06 /km)

What pace do I need for a sub-4-hour marathon?

You need to maintain 9:09 per mile (5:41 per km). For a sub-3-hour marathon: 6:52 per mile (4:16 per km). Use the “Calculate Time” tab above to find your target pace for any goal time.

How do I convert min/mile to min/km?

Divide by 1.60934. Example: 8:00/mile ÷ 1.60934 = 4:58/km. Or use our Pace Converter for instant conversion.

Understanding Running Pace

Pace = time per unit distance (e.g., 8:30 per mile). Speed = distance per unit time (e.g., 7.06 mph). They are inverses: a faster pace means a higher speed.

Pace is preferred by runners because it directly tells you how fast each mile or kilometer takes, making it easy to plan race strategy and track splits.
