What is a multiple in math?

The multiple of a number is the product of this number by any other number (0, 1, 2, 3, ...).

Our calculator works on the set of natural numbers, but there are multiples in the set of numbers, integers, real, etc. Therefore, a multiple can also be negative.

For example, the number 279 can be divided by 3 without a reminder. Like this, 279 is a multiple of 93, because, 3 times 93 equals 279. In other words, we can say that 279 is a multiple of 3 because there is a natural - 3 - which multiplied by 93 equals 279. The statement '279 is a multiple of 3' is equivalent '279 is divisible by 3', or that 3 is a divider of 279.

So to find the multiples of 93, simply multiply this number by a number of the set of natural numbers as many times as we want. See below how to do it for the number 93:

  • 93 x 0 = 0 so, 0 is a multiple of 93.
  • 93 x 1 = 93 so, 93 is a multiple of 93.
  • 93 x 2 = 186 so, 186 is a multiple of 93.
  • 93 x 3 = 279 so, 279 is a multiple of 93.
  • 93 x 4 = 372 so, 372 is a multiple of 93.
  • 93 x 5 = 465 so, 465 is a multiple of 93.
  • 93 x 6 = 558 so, 558 is a multiple of 93.
  • 93 x 7 = 651 so, 651 is a multiple of 93.
  • 93 x 8 = 744 so, 744 is a multiple of 93.
  • 93 x 9 = 837 so, 837 is a multiple of 93.

The first 10 multiples of 93 are: 0, 93, 186, 279, 372, 465, 558, 651, 744, 837.

Facts About Multiples

  • Any number is a multiple of itself (n x 1 = n).
  • Any number is a multiple of 1 (1 x n = n).
  • Zero is a multiple of any number (0 x n = 0).
  • The set of multiples of a number is an infinite set, since we can get this by multiplying the number given by all natural numbers.
  • The set of multiples of n can be represented by M n = {0 x n, 1 x n, 2 x n, 3 x n, 4 x n, ...} (where n is any natural). For example, the set of multiples of 93 is represented as M 93 = {0, 93,0,0,0, ...}.

Common Multiples

If two numbers are multiplied, then the product is a common multiple of these two numbers.

Example: if two numbers 93 and 3 are multiplied, then the result 279 is a common multiple of 93 and 3.

Note: The product of these two numbers is not necessarily the least common multiple-LCM of these numbers.
